The Next Person

Atiyeh Babanezhad
GESHIN1– SOMETIME IN THE MORNING
The sound of my heavy breaths whose ponderosity I could feel all night on my lungs, was piercing through the absolute silence of the room. The heavy lump in my throat, which I did not know whether it was the entwined threads of my unsettled mind in the suffocating avalanche of the night-time darkness or the silent screams of the sleeping inside, was looming to attack each and every cell of my being like a bloodthirsty predator. I felt the drops of my sweat between the fingers of the hand lodged on my lips, dreading that the horrifying wails of the limbo between sleep and awakeness would make the fear the permanent piece of this body, immersed in anguish. I jolted out my sleep with a feeling of suffocation to a dark room faintly illuminated by the glimmering old bedside lamp. I grabbed my phone and texted him:
Hi.
Deleted.
I’m not OK.
Deleted.
I need you.
Deleted.
Where are you? Worried for you… worried for you… worried.
There never was any reply for the messages inside the sent box of my phone. A fever of 45 clutching the cores of my cells and the trembles penetrating my bones made the very potion that could easily introduce every person to the abyss of death. I lay motionless on the bed like a corpse; I covered myself with the blanket; I stared at my phone screen, awaiting the call. But when I heard my grandmother’s old alarm clock going off at sunrise, I realized I had passed through the dark of the night and made it to the morning.
NIVAN2– A WEEK LATER
That day was different from the others. the fear or the illusion of the event. This sordid, horrendous event that engraved its scar on my chest and colored with a blood red every unfinished painting painted by Geshin and hanging on the walls of my room. We never contemplated leaving and letting go, but so much changed in that one week that she, as I wanted, was not here. Now, more than ever, I dreaded the thought of the foot prints lingering on the heavy snow of the mountain, foot prints that revealed that the owner of these marks was carrying a heavy load. Every step I took from the start to the end of the path on that high mountain made me feel that the ground beneath my feet was not strong enough to lead me to the summit.
This old grand tale, not something new or transient. Fear had no place in me, the child of mountains. But after hearing the call of the local boy; “A kolbar is stuck in the snow… A kolbar is stuck in the snow”, the damn idea started to blossom in me. That instant was a rehash of the same story, rehash of the events of all past years where we grew used to goodbyes, to the departure of another one of us in the beginning of that arduous path on the mountain… but… but this time, he drew his last breath in my arms. Amidst the seconds I ceased to hear his breaths, I saw all the moments of repose when every hair strand of my mother grew white before my eyes, I saw the night-time darkness nested in the eyes of Geshin that became permanently sad after that last breath, after hearing my departure, I saw all the unfinished paintings whose only color became black after that day.
“I didn’t want to be the next person; I didn’t want to be the next kolbar”.
GESHIN- AT SUNRISE
I did nothing but waiting. After a week of no contact, with a call at the eight o’clock of the last day of the week, he threw my sorrowful mind into a more harrowing pit of worry with a single sentence. I worried about the reason of him being, about his unheralded arrival, …
He said: “Be at the main square of the city ”.
The streets were of a feverish bustle. I made it to his side.
I said: “I can’t see you. I can’t hear you”.
I turned my head and without a single extra word, his mouth started to move.
“We must pack our bags and leave”.
With every word he uttered, one could see a greater burden of distress in his eyes.
He said: “We must immigrate immediately into a permanent exile”.
I was shocked. I was at a loss for words due to excitement. I was unable to get a word out to demand reasons for this idea and things he said. My head felt heavy. I felt like my soul left my body and I had no power. My body was feeling drained of all energy. he talked and I heard. He talked and I heard. He talked and I heard. In the piercing weather of the winter with snowflakes perching on our hair, my body was ablaze. I couldn’t stand on my feet. I took my jacket off. Nivan said: “We must go. More certain than ever. We must leave this land before the night falls”. I felt drained of blood. Among my rasping breaths and imminent faint, I ceased to perceive everything other than Nivan’s incessant whimpers who couldn’t grasp what was happening to me. He was receding and I was infatuated by his turquoise eyes; the ones that could never look me in mine, dreading that I would understand the words his eyes and heart whispered were not the same.
NIVAN- AFTER SIX MONTHS
There was no other way for me. All the doors once open for me were closing one at a time. I was so desperate and powerless that I couldn’t think properly or differentiate the right thing to do. Choosing had no meaning for me now just like all the past years when I had never known the astringent taste of choosing. Geshin was the only confidante of my bleak and meaningless days. She was all mine although I didn’t have her name written on the pristine pages of my identity card; because Geshin’s so-called father has revolved his life around heavy books whose every page and line preached about Darwin’s survival hypotheses so that nobody could ever forget the life moto of “The fitter a creature is, the higher is its chance of survival.” Now, I, Nivan, with my core belief of “No logic, only love, life has no meaning other than love.” was the only storm that could smash her impregnable fortress of resistance against my irrelevant desideratum.
Consciously or not, it was the only option I could resort to:
“I didn’t want to be the next person.”
GESHIN- AFTER SIX MONTHS
Six months passed and in this six months, if there was anything harder than leaving behind all the memories kept reoccurring to me, it was convincing my father who could never understand the meaning of The Next Person. My father knew nothing about a person called Nivan in my life. He didn’t know he was by my side during my flight. He didn’t even know the departure time of the flight I had booked. I had made my mind. I would have left even without their permission. The morning of the first day of the seventh month of the year, I went to the bank and received all my savings. Three, four, five times. I counted the money. The result was all the same: It wasn’t enough for two, only one. Nivan was talking very confidently of needing no money for the immigration. It was the first time I saw him talking in this manner. He told me about a friend from many years ago who he had never mentioned before. He himself was an immigrant and now has lent an enormous amount of money to Nivan to arrange the immigration affaires. I couldn’t and didn’t want to see the incongruity between the lies he told and the truth I saw in his eyes. Every passing day reduced my dependence and attachment. Some days even proved that one could place all past years and its memories in a thirty-kilogram-luggage, containing no more than two suitcases. We did everything together: visiting embassies, interviews, … The only thing that was different was a single e-mail that I received and he didn’t. An e-mail that should have been received by Nivan who was always far more intelligent than me. Applying for the best university of our dream city for the second, third and fourth time. But no sooner than two seasons away could we be together again.
I told him: “For the last time, for the last supper, I wanna see you, At the beetroot stand, just like past times. I’ll be there at 4”.
He was late as always. He arrived at 6.
I brought out a packet of Bahman3 from my pocket. I lit up a cigarette and placed it between his lips.
I said: “smoke.”
He said: “A frozen heart doesn’t need Bahman.”
I said: “I won’t leave if you tell me so.”
He said: “We didn’t choose you to leave alone and we can’t choose to stay.”
I said: “So, sing for me.”
He sang:
Find me again infatuated, break the silence of my solitude.
Find me as a lonely tulip with longing engraved on my face.
Your face reflecting my being, your love my ever-green sorrow.
Lay down again your head on my chest. 4
His face was obscured by the smoke diffusing towards me, I couldn’t see him properly but I knew his eyes were welled-up.
He said: “Tonight, the curls of your hair is orchestrating another coup in my eyes. The last coup.”
I lit up the fourth Bahman for him.
I said: “I hope you don’t forget me when I leave. I’d die if I forget you.”
He said: “Forgetting is a habit. Nobody has ever died from a habit. Do you know what’s the difference between us and other lovers? They never know if it is their last goodbye or not (he paused) but we know. It is better this way because now I can watch you to my heart’s content to satiate my longing. This way, a single day won’t drag like a whole year. He meant something different that night. It revoked horror in me. I was overwhelmed with the foreboding that something was going to happen that I wasn’t aware of. I was unsettled. Near the house, in an alley where nobody and nothing other than the darkness gazed at us, we said our last goodbyes until the next time. We knew nothing about the future awaiting us. I embraced him and He caressed my hair with his roughened hands that always reminded me of my grandfather and whispered in my ear:
“If you would hear anything about a fatal incident one day, don’t stop. Carry on living”.
Fear raged in me. I embraced him harder, closed my eyes, and listened to his breaths. He whispered again: “Carry on living.”
I felt his heart beating hardly against me. I felt a cool breeze on my face. I was cold, embraced him even harder and put my head on his chest. This was the first time I felt his fingers running through my hair. I took his hands between mine and placed it on my face. My face was so warm that a curious wave of heat began to flow in the veins of my frozen hands. He took my face with his hands, looked me in the eyes and whispered under his breath: “I love you very much”. All these years I knew he understood how to love more than me, knew love better than me, even knew me better than me. But it was the first time he uttered those words. The echoes of those words in my ears penetrated into my brain and gouged the walls of my anxious mind. My eyes denied sleep until the sunset of the next day. My tumultuous mind was resolved into a video player, playing the past trapped in memories again and again, fending the sleep off my eyes.
NIVAN- DEPARTURE DAY- SOMETIME IN THE NIGHT
I typed all my sentences on my phone so that I could tell what I had in my heart. Before sending the text, I heard a familiar voice:
“I know they are different, the words that come out of your mouth and the things on your mind, which I can read like the pages of an open book”. I turned my head and felt Geshin’s never-leaving presence.
She said: “I knew there was a third way, never expressed with words. I knew you would leave without letting me know. I knew that was why you kept avoiding my eyes so that I wouldn’t read the lies nested in them”.
I felt euphoric feeling her presence beside me but I couldn’t let her enter this complex and uncertain game for my sake. She has always been so smart, so sagacious, always easily differentiating the right from the wrong.
– I have entered a game which I know will culminate into a gamble on my life, even if not in failure.
-Is it worth?
– What is it worth?
– Is it worth burning all the bridges behind you?
– No.
– Is it worth going and losing?
– No.
– Is it worth gambling on your life to enter the prohibited zone?
– No.
(Silence)
– It is worth not being the next person.
-Not being the next person …. we’ll end it together.
– It’s the last card.
– After all, this path you’ve chosen …
– Do you want to…
– I want to gamble on my life. It is better to walk on the edge of a knife for one night than to dangle from a worn-out rope all my life, than to live face to face with death every single day.
Her unwavering insistence, her childish stubbornness that made her the winner of every argument, was the most certain and appropriate way to get on anybody’s wick. But the very words and behavior make me love her again and again in every beat of my heart and I did surrender. As always, I couldn’t stand against her this time too and accepted her wishes, albeit irrational.
Some days later… some days later… That day arrived.
GESHIN- SOME DAYS LATER- IMMIGRANTS’ SHIP
We had been aboard for several hours, along with some people, each one of whom had their unique tale. A student refusing to join the military and wanted to build a future for himself; a baby resting in the arms of his mother, who has entered this world without wanting to; A man well-known in his city about whom no one knew why he had chosen this path; a divorced woman who just wanted to be with her child; a musician that I had watched his performance many times before in the halls of his city, whose beautiful and mellifluous voice we had come to love in such a short period of time; a boy and girl whose presence I’m positive I had felt at the main square in that day; and finally, I, who enjoyed the warmth of Nivan’s hands between my fingers for some hours without any care in the world. All of us had only a backpack whose content was everything we had in those years of our lives. All of us with only one purpose:
“We did not want to be the next person”.
The sudden sound of twilight was terrifying me. The abrupt and formidable trembles of the ship whose grandeur was dwindling away every minute was unnerving me. Every way I looked, I saw people who had held their breath and were praying quietly to survive this calamity. The shouts of cursing and fighting of the captain and the owners of the ship as well as the others on the ship were getting louder by minute. Amidst this turmoil and illusion, there was a single sentence swirling on my mind, a sentence from Ahmad Shamloo5: “Nowhere, never have been the calls for life left unanswered”.
NIVAN- REFUGEE CAMP
One year has passed from that abysmal, deathly day. The news announced that from all the passengers of that ship, only two people were bestowed with the second chance of life. Two people… two people… Every time I visit that hideous and nightmarish incident in my mind, why do I see myself, alone, casted away from the wreck of a ship at the bottom of the sea? I don’t know if the other person who survived was Geshin or not. Someone who has just been transferred from another camp to ours mentioned among his night-time stories a girl who would spend all her days drawing paintings that she would never complete, a girl living in a wooden hut whose walls were adorned with unfinished paintings. Maybe it is she, the same Geshin who, in desperate and bleak days of the distant times, specialized in demonstrating …, Geshin was the only person who would take refuge in drawing the portraits of free people in her wandering reveries. How many hours, days or years I will endure the rasp of the ants that pounce my sad hut, I do not know. How many summer afternoons I, a thirtyish man with strong arms, will hover under the blazing rays of the sun waiting in never-ending lines, I do not know. For how long I will offer my ebullient and appreciating smile when I get my hands on some boiled potatoes to feed the body which is not more than a layer of skin covering some bones while my knee pains keep frustrating and enraging me, I do not know. I don’t know how many days I will survive the vehement fights braking out in the lines of the people who struggle to be the first person to empty their bowels; I don’t know how many nights I will make it to the morning escaping the ambushes of the strangers who want to grasp the infinitesimal belongings of the people who hug them at night into a restless, shallow sleep. I have seen so many people who have fled this hell. Every night, I sleep dreaming of the day I would hold Geshin’s hands and we would walk under spring rains. I don’t know after how many sunsets and sunrises, our dream city will welcome us, but I have only one answer to each question starting with why and questioning the reason I chose to be here:
“I didn’t want to be the next person”.
